Mister Rogers, who is wearing a reindeer hat, trades hats with Mr. McFeely. They try on some different hats while Mister Rogers explains that hats can be fun to wear but they don’t change who a person is. In the Neighborhood of Make-Believe, Mr. McFeely delivers a bag of hats to Queen Sara and Lady Aberlin who are wearing hats for fun. King Friday thinks the hat wearing rather foolish but still declares the day Hat Day, a day of fun. Lady Aberlin distributes hats to Henrietta and X, and then meets Randy S. Caribou, who has her put hats on his antlers. Together they distribute hats to Lady Elaine and Daniel. Lady Elaine recruits Randy for her television program, and Randy and Daniel overcome their initial fears of each other by talking. Miss Paulificate arrives and invites all to the castle for a hat party. Mister Rogers visits an arts center where Andy Holiner and Alice Johnson lead some children in songs and play. Mister Rogers talks about the many kinds of games and songs and the value of repeating favorite songs that seem like old friends.
Mister Rogers plays with the Neighborhood of Make-Believe model and talks about who lives there as he places the miniature characters on or near their homes. He goes to see some children practice soccer and scrimage together. Mister Rogers talks about practice and team sports. Mister Rogers talks about including everyone on the special team and how he likes to be together with his television friends. He sings “It’s You I Like.” In the Neighborhood of Make-Believe, Randy S. Caribou plays hide-and-seek with Trolley and expresses his wish for a soccer ball to play with. Chef Brockett has two cakes in the shape of soccer balls that he is to bring to Queen Sara for a soccer party she is planning. Randy impetuously squashes one of the cakes with his hoof, then runs away. At the castle Edgar Cooke repairs the cake. At the school the children and Miss Cow recite “Pease Porridge Hot” and then talk about soccer. Randy asks to hide in the school and they say that he may. When Chef Brockett comes to the school and explains that that cake has been fixed, Randy comes out of hiding. When Daniel Tiger and Randy express their sadness about not being on a soccer team, Ana suggests a boy-girl-reindeer-tiger team.
Mister Rogers says that the basket he has brought in with him was made by a Native American of the Apache tribe. The owner keeps it by his front door for his friends to put their burdens in when they come to visit him. Mister Rogers shows other baskets of different sizes, shapes, and uses and talks about individual differences. He then goes to watch some children practicing for the Special Olympics. Mister Rogers talks about his not being chosen for basketball, but how good he felt when he was finally given a chance and made a basket. He encourages his television friends to make up stories about the Neighborhood of Make-Believe, and to pick up after they play with things.In the Neighborhood of Make-Believe, Lady Aberlin, Bob Dog, Handyman Negri, and Miss Paulificate are singing and dancing together. King Friday thinks there must be more important things to do, but when asked to join them, he agrees. Queen Sara says how pleased she is to see the King so happy. Bob Dog and the king talk about their disappointment and sadness at never having been invited to be on a team. Randy Caribou invites them and Lady Aberlin to join the new, King-Woman-Dog-Boy-Girl-Reindeer-Tiger team.
Mister Rogers demonstrates a Neighborhood of Make-Believe board game and says that games don’t play themselves, they need people to play them. Mrs. McFeely delivers a large green ball. Suzie McConnell stops by and shows Mister Rogers some drills she uses to improve her basketball skills. They talk about learning and teaching. In the Neighborhood of Make-Believe, the team is being outfitted for their first game. Queen Sara excuses herself to do something else she enjoys. Bob Dog talks about the time he just didn’t feel like playing a game with his friends. His friends thought he was mad, but he told them he would rather play some other time. Lady Aberlin helps Daniel put on his outfit, explains the word outfit to him, and says that both winning and losing are acceptable. Lady Aberlin and Daniel asks X the Owl and Henrietta Pussycat to join the team. X and Henrietta say that they thought everyone was mad at them because they were the last to be asked. Randy Caribou brings them outfits with an updated team name on them. Mister Rogers and Mr. McFeely watch a tape of a group of people, called Dance Alloy, rolling around on large green balls to music. Mister Rogers and Mr. McFeely try doing some of the same motions on the large green ball. Mister Rogers says learning some things takes lots of trying and hard work but gives one a good feeling afterward.
Mister Rogers talks about the games of peek-a-boo and hide-and-go-seek, and why some people cry when playing a game. He says it is unkind to laugh at someone who is crying, but kind to try to understand why they are crying. He shows two different kinds of bowling balls and then goes to a bowling alley with Mr. McFeely. They do some bowling, talk about it, learn how the pinsetter works, and watch Marilyn Barnett teaching some children how to bowl. Mister Rogers talks about putting away toys and how beneficial play and pretend are for growing up. In the Neighborhood of Make-Believe, the team is dressed and ready, but must decide what to play. Daniel suggests hide-and-go-seek, and the entire team hides. Lady Elaine finds them by turning everything upside down with her Bommerang-Toomerang-Soomerang. She rights them after King Friday says that she has won. Bob Dog claims all on the team are winners because they all had fun. When he leaves, Randy gives Lady Elaine his outfit, and she suggests that they all go bowling.
