Mister Rogers has brought a bird feeder for the chicks and ducklings delivered by Mr. McFeely. Mister Rogers points out some of the differences between ducklings and chicks. In the Neighborhood of Make-Believe, Mr. Anybody is a ball player. He tries to play with Robert Troll who is very sad because Sara Saturday is away. Lady Elaine joins the game and throws the ball to Robert Troll. He misses the ball and then can’t find it. It is returned by someone new to the Neighborhood of Make-Believe, Dr. William Duckbill Bagpipe Platypus IV, a veterinarian from Westwood who is looking for someplace to live. Lady Elaine is very suspicious because she doesn’t recognize what kind of animal he is. Robert Troll, an old friend of Dr. Bill, explains he is a duckbill platypus. Robert Troll cheers up after seeing his old friend. Back with Mister Rogers, he has a carving of a duckbill platypus.
Mister Rogers has several packages of seeds. He explains that each kind of seed grows a different kind of plant. Miss Emilie has a poem, written by a child, about growing. She invites the viewer to make up some poetry. In the Neighborhood of Make-Believe, Lady Aberlin is pretending to water the flowers. She and X play a game in which she must guess who he is pretending to be. Henrietta announces that Dr. and Mrs. Platypus will be moving in today. X and Henrietta ask Robert Troll about the Platypus famiily. They want to find a hole in the ground to live in. X says they can live with him until they dig their own hole. Henrietta offers to make curtains.
Mister Rogers has two boxes, one empty and one filled with buckeyes. He shows how the smooth buckeye is under the prickly cover. After exploring the difference between “empty” and “full,” Mister Rogers offers Mr. McFeely one buckeye for each of his pockets. In the Neighborhood of Make-Believe, Officer Clemmons is helping to move the Platypus’ belongings into X’s tree. He and Elsie Jean are having trouble finding enough space for everything. Nurse Miller takes Dr. Bill’s medical equipment to the pond. Officer Clemmons teaches her the welcoming song he sang for Elsie Jean. They sing it for Dr. Bill. Back with Mister Rogers, he empties his full wastepaper basket into an empty garbage can. Mister Rogers serves Officer Clemmons cake and milk.
Mister Rogers counts the buttons on his sweater. He has a picture of a boat, the word “boat” printed on a card, and a toy boat in a box. After a film showing him boating with his sons, he sails the boat in a tub. Another film shows children sailing boats in a pond. In the Neighborhood of Make-Believe, Dr. Bill is angry and impatient because of King Friday’s rule that in his absence Digger Digorum must supervise all digging. They must wait for her to arrive from Australia. Lady Elaine has begun digging with a steam shovel, saying it is the machine that is digging. Handyman explains that the machine cannot work without her. Digger finally shows up. She says they must all wait until tomorrow to begin. Elsie Jean and Dr. Bill agree to wait when she shows them the crustaceans she has brought them to eat. Back with Mister Rogers, he explains how his sundial works.
Mister Rogers has several shovels with him. He uses one to put fertilizer on one of his plants. Coach Saunders come by to exercise with Mister Rogers, who tells him about the new neighbors in the Neighborhood of Make-Believe. In the Neighborhood of Make-Believe, Nurse Miller is passing out pretend drinks. She gives X and Henrietta each a glass. X has been digging, and Henrietta has sewn curtains with a duckbill pattern. When Nurse Miller gets to the digging site, Dr. Bill, Elsie Jean, and Handyman Negri are resting. Handyman and Nurse Miller go to the castle for a popsicle. Back with Mister Rogers, Handyman Negri brings a popsicle to share with him. Mr. Rogers demonstrates how he makes homemade popsicles and gives Handyman a tray of frozen ones.
